Piano moving in Cyprus: upright and grand pianos
A piano is heavy, top-heavy and delicate at the same time. We plan every piano move around the instrument, the stairs and the doorways, so it arrives safely and in one piece.
Moving a piano is not like moving a wardrobe. An upright piano typically weighs between 200 and 300 kg, and most of that weight sits high and towards the back. A grand piano can weigh even more and has long, fragile legs, a lyre (pedal assembly) and a polished lid that marks easily. Lifting one the wrong way can damage the instrument, the building and the people carrying it.
That is why piano moving is one of the services we are known for. We move pianos for families, music teachers, schools and venues in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and the Famagusta district, from ground-floor homes to apartments with tight stairwells.
Upright vs grand piano: what changes in the move
| Upright piano | Grand / baby grand piano | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical weight | About 200–300 kg | About 250–500 kg or more, depending on size |
| How it travels | Upright, on a dolly, wrapped and strapped | Legs and lyre removed, laid on its straight side, fully padded and strapped |
| Preparation on site | Lid locked or secured, keyboard and corners protected | Lid removed or secured, legs, lyre and music desk wrapped separately |
| Team | Usually 3–4 movers, depending on access | Usually 4 or more movers, depending on size and access |
| Main risk | Tipping: the weight is high and at the back | Leg and lid damage, and the size of the case in turns and doorways |
Stairs, narrow doors and tight corners
Most piano moves are decided by the access, not by the distance. Before the move we ask for the number of steps at each end, whether there is a turn in the stairwell, the width of doors and corridors, and whether a lift can take the weight (most passenger lifts in Cyprus apartment buildings cannot). Photos or a short video sent on WhatsApp help a lot.
On stairs we control the piano step by step with straps and enough people on the lower side. Nobody rushes and nobody improvises. If the access is genuinely too tight, we tell you before moving day, not on the landing.
Protection and equipment
Every piano is wrapped in thick padded moving blankets and stretch film, with extra protection on corners, pedals and the keyboard lid. It is moved on a piano dolly, secured with straps, and fixed upright against the side of the truck so it cannot shift during transport. Grand pianos travel lying on their straight side, fully padded.
- Padded blankets and stretch wrap on the whole case
- Separate wrapping for grand piano legs, lyre and music desk
- Protection for floors, door frames and banisters at both addresses
- Secure strapping inside the truck for the whole journey
Climate and tuning after the move
Pianos react to heat and humidity, and summer in Cyprus is hot. We avoid leaving a piano standing in the sun or in a closed truck longer than necessary, and in summer we prefer early starts. In your new home, keep the piano away from direct sunlight, air-conditioning vents and radiators.
Even a perfectly smooth move can affect tuning, because the instrument has to settle in its new room. Most tuners recommend waiting around two to four weeks before tuning.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move a piano in Cyprus?
It depends on the type of piano, the number of steps at each address and the distance. Send us those details (photos help) and we will give you a free, clear quote.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes. Stairs are the most common challenge in piano moves. Tell us the number of steps and whether there are turns, and we will bring the right team and equipment.
Do you move grand pianos?
Yes. Grand and baby grand pianos are moved lying on their side, fully padded, with the legs, lyre and lid removed or secured and wrapped separately, then reassembled at the destination.
Can the piano go in a lift?
Only if the lift is rated for the weight of the piano plus the movers, and the piano fits. Most passenger lifts in apartment buildings are not, so we usually use the stairs.
Will my piano need tuning after the move?
Usually yes. Pianos need time to settle in a new room. We recommend booking a tuner about two to four weeks after the move.
Can you move a piano on the same day?
Sometimes, depending on our schedule and the access. Call or WhatsApp us and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
